The Master program Engineering Cybernetics at the University of Stuttgart is the English-language counterpart of the well-established German Master's degree course Technische Kybernetik founded in 1972 and highly recognized for its educational successes.

The focus is on developing extensive and broad knowledge through methodologically oriented courses in the core areas of Engineering Cybernetics, i.e., control, robotics, system dynamics, modeling and simulation.

The degree program distinguishes itself for a strong emphasis on foundational courses in these areas through an in-depth use of a range of applied mathematical tools.

Upon completion, you will be competent in the task of abstracting complex problems arising in traditional and modern engineering applications (aerospace, mechanical, biomedical, energy systems, to name a few) and use these abstractions to solve control analysis and design problems using a variety of methods grounded in systems theory, dynamical systems modeling and simulation, and computational methods.

Alumni have manifold career opportunities after graduation and are highly esteemed in different engineering sectors. Many former students of this study program hold prestigious leadership positions both in industry and academia. A survey from 2022 shows that over 80% of alumni find jobs within the first three months and 100% after 10 months.

Which interests and skills should I have?

This study program requires a strong background knowledge on disciplines which serve as bases for the core areas of Engineering Cybernetics. Specifically, applicants are required to provide evidence of courses taken in at least one of:

  • advanced mathematics,
  • basics of systems and control,
  • modelling.

Moreover, strong motivation and dedication to become confident with theoretical problems of applied relevance is required.

Which areas of specialization are there?

Within the core areas of control, robotics, system dynamics, modeling and simulation, you will be able to shape your individual profile through a broad and compelling selection of elective options allowing you to specialize according to your interests. Among other things, you will further focus on two specialization areas within the broad field of any cybernetic subjects, which will include for example the following:

  • Autonomous Systems and Control
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Flight Control and Systems Engineering
  • Mathematical Methods of Cybernetics
  • Nonlinear Mechanics
  • Robotics
  • System Dynamics

What job prospects are available to me after graduation?

Engineering Cybernetics alumni are well-trained specialists in control, modeling, and simulation and are therefore in great demand in both industry and academia. Thanks to the interdisciplinary nature of the Engineering Cybernetics program and the wide range of possible fields of application, the career prospects for graduates are excellent and largely independent of economic fluctuations.

In industry, numerous career opportunities open up after graduation, particularly in key sectors such as

  • mechanical engineering,
  • biomedics and biotechnology,
  • energy,
  • aerospace,
  • automotive,
  • electrical,
  • chemical industries.

Moreover, the program provides an excellent foundation for a scientific career at universities and research institutions. Recent surveys indicate that 78% of graduates end up in academic or corporate research positions and one third starts a PhD at the University of Stuttgart or in other well established international universities.
